Development and Implementation of a Zoning Management Plan for the PAP (2007 – 2008)

Project start and end date: 2007-2008
Funded by: USAID/Jordan Tourism Development Project (Phase I)
Project cost: JD 40,553

In collaboration with the Department of Antiquities of Jordan and the Petra Archaeological Park (PAP), PNT developed a three phased project to protect the significance, values, and integrity of the Petra Archaeological Park (PAP), through the introduction of a GIS based zoning scheme to improve the management of the visitors and resources. The purpose of the zoning effort was to delineate types of usage, develop economic potential for each zone and maximize the site’s potential as a revenue generator all while protecting the site values.  The project also aimed at providing government officials responsible for site management with management tools and guidance to help them in planning and in the day-to-day management of the Park. PNT played a critical role during Phase I of the project by obtaining endorsement from governmental authorities, mobilizing the team and gathering relevant data required for development of the Zoning Management Plan. Phase I deliverables were handed over to the USAID contractor to develop the Zoning Management Plan.
