Archaeological investigations have been carried out in Petra and surrounding areas since the 1930's. Every year several excavation teams, both national and international, come to Petra to research and uncover more of the history of this unique site. In 1994 UNESCO identified and listed 800 monuments in Petra. Recent surveys show that the actual number of monuments is far greater than this.
The Department of Antiquities (DOA) is the Government department that, by law, owns all the archaeological sites in Jordan and is the body responsible for granting permission for excavations.
New excavations are often taking place in Petra and we try our best to constantly update these pages so please keep checking them. If you would like your work to be included on this page or the newsletter please email email@example.com.
